How To Remove Stuttering From Games

In this post I will point out some tips to reduce or completely remove stuttering from games. Stuttering can cause a variety of problems to a gamer varying from unenjoyable gameplay to even headaches that can ruin your entire day. The various tips that I mention here can also be found in many other posts labeled under gaming performance tweaks which also lists many other tweaks you can try to improve your frame rates/performance.

1. Close all other running apps from task manager especially your antivirus (Right click on the tray icon and click on disable until restart. This process may vary with the antivirus)

2. If you have a buggy or overclocked graphics driver, forcing a specific performance state may help.

3. Go to the control center of your graphics driver(usually in control panel) and try reducing 'pre rendered frames' to 1. if it increases the stutter, then increase it up to   3 frames. Either will prove to be helpful

4. Make sure your monitor's refresh rate and the refresh rate in the game's settings are equal. Go to screen resolution by right clicking on desktop and select 'advanced settings'. In the new window, select monitor tab to check and change the refresh rate of your monitor. This is a common issue and stuttering will occur if the refresh rate of your monitor isn't equal to the game's refresh rate.

5. Decrease the graphic intensity of the game through it's settings.

6. Update your graphics driver.

7. If you have over clocked your graphics, reduce it by about a 100 MHz. Pushing your card beyond the limit can make it behave strangely including artifacts, snow and stutter.

8. Make sure that no new patches are available for your game, if there are, install them immediately. While most of the stutter problems are caused by the system itself, this probability cannot be ruled out as bugs in the game could cause the stutter.

9. Make sure your graphics card is not overheating, many monitoring apps can be found with a Google search. If the temperature is above 95 you may have an overheating issue.

10. Clean out the heat sinks of graphics card  using a soft brush and clear any obstructions of free airflow inside the case including cobwebs and dust.
