How To Repair Windows Using System Restore For Windows XP/Vista/7

In this post I will help you to do a system restore of windows. When you install a program or hardware driver, windows automatically creates a restore point containing information about your current system's status including the status of  it's drivers, settings and some of its important files. When your system becomes unstable or gives you BSODs (Blue Screen Of Death) frequently, you can use system restore to restore your system's status back to when there wasn't a problem.

System restore will help to repair your computer without completely formatting it's filesystem,  therefore it also has it's flaws which include broken drivers, broken programs, missing files from desktop and documents...etc. If you face any of these problems re-installing  windows may be your only solution.

IF YOUR SYSTEM DOES NOT BOOT INTO DESKTOP

If you are unable to boot into desktop you will have to try system restore via safe mode. Follow the steps below for Windows Xp and Windows 7.

1. Switch on your system and soon after POST(The process in which your motherboard information is shown) press and hold F8 button until a window of "Advanced Options" is shown.

2. Choose "Safe Mode" and wait for the boot process to be completed.

3. Windows should boot into the desktop and a dialog box showing whether to do system restore is shown. Choose the option to run system restore. If such a dialog box is not shown, go to "Run" ('Windows key' + R) and type in msconfig and press "Enter". In the new window select "Tools" tab. Choose system restore from the list and click "Launch". In XP there will be no tab named "Tools" but System restore can be found in another one of the tabs.

4. Click on "Next" and choose a restore point of your choice. Hint: Do not choose a restore point that is too old or too new.

5. Click on next and the process should start immediately. The system will restart and should successfully boot into desktop after completing the restore process. If the process takes less than 3 minutes try another restore point because it is likely to be unsuccessful restore.

IF YOUR SYSTEM  BOOTS INTO DESKTOP

1. Open "Run" ("Windows key + R) and type in msconfig. Press enter.

2. In tools tab choose system restore from the tab and click on launch. In Windows Xp there will be no tab named tools but system restore can be found in one of the another tabs.

3. Choose a restore point from the list. Hint: Do not choose a restore point that is too old or too new.

4. Click next and the system restore should start immediately. After the automatic restore windows should boot into desktop successfully and hopefully all your problems will be solved.

System restore may corrupt your newly installed programs therefore it is recommended to re-install all the programs which you installed after the date of system restore, especially antivirus software.
