How To Prevent Windows From Writing To A Removable Device

There are a lot of reasons if  you do not want windows to have write access to removable devices, such as  virus infection or if you want to extend the lifespan of your favorite Pen-drive.Lower write cycles mean higher lifespan.Follow the instructions below to disable windows from writing onto a device.Note that you can always change to the way it was.Lets get to it.

1. First go to command prompt and type in 'gpedit.msc' and press enter

2. A window will appear.Double click on 'User Configuration'

 

3. Double click on 'Administrative Templates'

 

4. Double click on 'System'

 

5. Double click on 'Removable Storage Access'

 

 6. Double click on 'Removable Disks: Deny Write Access'

7. Select 'Enabled' and press 'OK'

 

Thats it! You can no longer write to removable devices 

 

 

How to re-enable write access

Follow all the steps to the seventh step.Instead of selecting 'Enabled' in the seventh step select 'Disabled' and press 'OK'
